Bhaktapur and Panauti Day Trip
Bhaktapur's squares in the morning, then the quiet river town of Panauti and its 13th-century temple, on a full-day trip from Kathmandu.

Panauti sits where the Roshi and Punyamati rivers meet, 32 km south-east of Kathmandu, and surprisingly few visitors ever make it there. That's their loss. Its Indreshwor Mahadev temple, first built in 1294, is one of the oldest pagoda temples in Nepal, and the brick lanes around it still look much the way Bhaktapur did fifty years ago.
Your day starts in Bhaktapur with a guided walk through its three squares. After lunch, you'll drive through the farmland of Kavre to Panauti, stroll down to the confluence and the temple, and head back to Kathmandu in the late afternoon.
